My name is Shirley Nickerson. In February of 2004 I had the pleasure of visiting a sanctuary that took in Wolves and wolf/dogs. It was such an amazing experience.

I listened to the care givers explain how they are funded only by fellow animal lover's donations. Because they are all non- profit organizations.

Well being a lover of K9's and intrigued by Wolves, and after hearing the needs of these sanctuaries, I felt there had to be something I could do to help.

I found a sanctuary closer to my home and again visited the wolves and heard yet again that the only way they survive is by donations of meat, money etc.... by this time I knew I needed to help. I asked myself what can I do??? I work a full 40 hour week in the medical field, but I have the weekends off. So I put together a flyer and started handing them out to my patients, friends, family and neighbors. Within one week I had gathered at least 500 lbs of a variety of meats that were considered freezer burnt and would have been thrown away. I delivered it to the sanctuary the next weekend. Within another week I had again collected another 500 lbs of freezer burnt meat. The sanctuary didn't have enough room so they directed me to another local sanctuary in need. I delivered my meat to them, driving many miles to do so.

I have been learning from all of the care givers at these sanctuaries and have discovered this incredible need of help. They receive calls daily from people who were intrigued by owning these wonderfully exotic animals thinking they could turn them into PETS...Surprise "THEY ARE NOT PETS" they are wild animals. When people discover the nature of their "PETS" they try to place them in sanctuaries/refuges. Most of these places are full. They are turned away due to lack of enclosures or limited space. Most of the animals that are in these sanctuaries have been rescued from road side zoos, circuses, photo farms, fur farms, canned hunt ranches, dormitory's, back yards or they are rejects from commercials on TV and yes some are abandoned and end up in humane societies and end up getting euthanized. Each and everyone of these animals were born in captivity never knowing freedom... nor will they ever have that privilege. Can you imagine living in a pen that is 8 x10 when your nature tells you should be roaming 50 or more miles. All because people thought it would be great to have a WOLF.

At the sanctuaries they try to keep the enclosures in as natural environment as possible so that the lucky few who end up there can live as close to the way nature intended.

I have been helping 7 local sanctuaries and in just over 1 year I have collected and delivered over 107,000 lbs of meat. I collect Beef, Chicken, Buffalo, Fish, Elk, Lamb, Deer, ect... and I'm feeding mountain lions, bears, wolves, wolf/dogs, coyotes, coy/dogs, foxes and the occasional badger. Each and everyone of these animals were brought into captivity by HUMANS. They will never know freedom.
